Because of their small stature and inconspicuous location, novice skateboarders may underestimate the importance of skateboard bearings. These small metal circles are inserted into your wheels and are the only part that actually is exposed to the axle. Unfortunately, the system used to rate bearings—ABEC—is quite ineffective when it comes to skateboarding.
If you are like most boarders, you probably abuse their board, and this necessitates tough, heavy-duty bearings that also provide precision. This typically means a bearing that rates a 3 or a 5 on the ABEC, but remember that this system is imperfect. Unfortunately, one of the only ways to determine if bearings are right for you is to try them out or rely on review from your friends.
